The Miramar Patriots landed in the seven spot of this year's South Florida high school football top 20 poll by the Miami Herald.
The Patriots went 7-5 in 2012 and ranked 35th in the state. Damon Cogdell will start his 5th year as head coach for the Patriots. Miramar won its last state title in Cogdell's first year in 2009.
Here's more from the Herald:
7. MIRAMAR (7-5)Outlook: A state champion in 2009 and a state runner-up in 2011, is Miramar due for another big season in 2013?The Patriots could make the answer a resounding “Yes” if its returning talent led primarily by its “Dark Side” defense and running game comes together. Senior Andre Godfrey and juniors Tyrek Cole and Malik Atkins should give the Patriots one of the best secondaries in the state. The backfield of seniors Eric Pittman and Cameron Rigby is also one of the best overall and senior quarterback Nick Jeanty has had an extra year to get comfortable with the offense, which should pay dividends.A tough schedule that includes Plantation and St. Thomas Aquinas early should have the Patriots ready to contend with rival Cypress Bay for the District 12-8A title and beyond.Key games: Sept. 12, Plantation; Sept. 20, St. Thomas; Oct. 25, Cypress Bay.
The Patriots will kick off the season at South Plantation on Aug 30.
Fun Fact:
Geno Smith (New York Jets) and Stedman Bailey (St. Louis Rams) played for Miramar from 2006-2009.
