Miramar to Vote on $50 million Revenue Bond

The first of two town hall meetings was held this past Tuesday at Sunset Lakes Community Center. Mayor Lori Moseley presented the breakdown of the proposed $50 million revenue bond with the two largest projects being a new amphitheater in Miramar Regional Park and the construction of a new Miramar Police Headquarters in town center.

The amphitheater will cost $4.2 million, while the police headquarters will cost $14.5 million, roughly 29% of the $50 million revenue bond.

The bond also includes other public safety projects and renovations to current infrastructure and public buildings. Click here (.pdf) for more details.

The bulk of the proposed revenue bond, almost 50%, would go towards park projects. The one project which caused the most discussion at the first town hall meeting was the amphitheater in Miramar Regional Park.

The Miramar Community and Cultural Amphitheater will seat 3,000-5,000 people and will include restrooms, a concession stand and a ticket booth. The city plans to host up to 9 events at the amphitheater annually.

Residents in attendance were concerned with the noise and traffic an amphitheater would bring. They cited the traffic at Miramar Regional Park during this year’s Fourth of July celebration which kept residents trapped inside the park for hours after the event was over. Residents claim an amphitheater would only create more traffic problems.

"All the cars are coming from outside," said one resident, "I don't want the noise and the traffic. That amphitheater will abutt a community. I go to concerts, and they're pretty loud. And you're abutting a community and you're abutting a hospital."

Some residents were in favor of the amphitheater, saying the project will create jobs and help develop Miramar as a center for entertainment by attracting events and residents from other cities.

"What are we afraid of?" said another resident, "It's almost like we're afraid to invite people in. If you put up this project and you let it grow along you're going to actually provide jobs. Let's look at some of the positives."

Mayor Moseley will host the final town hall meeting at the Multi-Service Complex in east Miramar at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

The city commission will vote on the proposed bond at the next commission meeting on Aug. 21.
